Sarah Carr

I am qualified in language and management, having a first-class BA (Hons) in French and Scandinavian Language and Linguistics with Teaching English as a Foreign Language, and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree. I am also in my final year of counsellor training, studying for a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling at Cheshire Therapy Centre; my placement is in bereavement support.

I am an Advanced Professional Member of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP – click on the logo to the right), and a member of Clarity and the Plain Language Association InterNational (PLAIN). I have served as coordinator of the SfEP’s North West local group, UK representative of Clarity, and secretary of PLAIN. I also belong to the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy, as a student member.

I have management experience in both public and private sectors. Following a spell with Touche Ross accountants, I worked in the National Health Service (NHS) for eight years as a general manager. During this time, I was seconded to the University of Manchester for a year, as Fellow in Health Service Management. I established Carr Consultancy in 1997, and have been self-employed ever since.

Alongside my freelance work, I served as Honorary Fellow with the Institute of Medicine, Law and Bioethics, University of Manchester from 1998 to 2002; and as Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Public Policy and Management, University of Manchester, from 2002 to 2005. I am currently an associate of Plain Language Commission (PLC) and a faculty member at NHS R&D North West

I enjoy writing for publication, and have written a book (Tackling NHS Jargon: getting the message across, Radcliffe Medical Press, 2002); course (Writing in Plain Language: Clearer Letters and Emails, PLC, 2006), two guides (Editing into Plain Language: Working for non-publishers, SfEP, 2011, reprinted with updates in 2014; and Communicating with Older People: Writing in plain English, PLC, 2016), several book chapters, and many journal and website articles.
